Polish Welders help McKendry Fabrications Buck the trend
I couldn’t agree more with Colin McKendrys comments on the Belfast Telegraph owner of McKendry Fabrications, who has a positive attitude to the current market. In my opinion if you keep positive and work hard then you can take advantage of this current crisis.
One of the huge advantages of being small is you can be flexible and make changes quickly, unlike the bigger corporates who can get caught out. But it isn’t his growth that has caught my eye but his attitude to the work force, shows you what can be achieved.
As you may or may not know I used to be in recruitment, and to some extent still am and I hear so much about the exploitation of workers particularly of contractors from the new European countries. Unfortunately there is a tendency to take advantage and although there is a cash benefit he still see knows the value of good workers and how to reward, it isn’t all about money, and as Colin puts it:
“Polish immigrants are very good because of the traditional training that still exists in that country, and I have two Polish foremen,” he said.
“I invest a lot in their training and even help them get on language courses, as well as assisting with their housing and I have helped with bringing their wives over.
“I help them get accommodation and to integrate into the community.”
So if you are looking for work in fabrications then check out their latest news
Welder Blows himself up
I just had to write about this amazing welding story, apparently a welder sitting in his van on his way to work decides to light up a cigarette. The next thing he knows is the van is completely destroyed.
It appears it was a complete miracle, particularly as the shop owner nearby thought he was still in Iraq!!
The article can be found here via WJBF news channel, you have to watch the video report of the accident, just unbelievable.
Welders needed in Rhode Island
Its interesting how the market is hotting up for welders, as it seem some companies on Rhode Island are crying out for welders. Below are a couple of excerpts from www.projo.com.
“Absolutely. Big time,” said Ken Aurecchia, business manager for Local 51, the plumbers, pipefitters and service technicians union, when asked if there was a shortage of welders in Rhode Island.
Joe Matarese, human resources manager for Senesco Marine at Quonset Point, said his company has had to import welders from out of state. “We’re building five vessels right now, and to keep up with that demand we need more welders. We need to import welders from Mississippi and Alabama, because we can’t find the local ones we need,” he said.
Matarese said Senesco is using 146 welders, and 75 of them are contract employees from outside Rhode Island.
“There is a shortage, particularly when it comes to getting the quality welders we need. There are some people who know how to weld, but not the kind of work we need,” Matarese said. So Senesco is starting a six-week training program for new welders that will start with six students.
“It’s a basic welding program. But when it comes to the technicalities of what we need to do, we’re going to be very specific … hopefully, we’ll get six people who can start right away,” Matarese said.
Robert A. Hamilton, communications director for Electric Boat, said the company is not hiring new welders at the moment. But because Congress recently authorized building two new submarines a year, instead of just one, starting in 2011, he anticipates Electric Boat will need more welders soon.
Some good leads there, so if you are in the UK looking to make a move it looks like the states will have a lot to offer!
Welder Wanted
This is just a quick post to see if any welders are interested in writing Articles for www.international-welder.com The reason being is that although I get many visits to this site, I am finding it increasingly difficult to find time to update.
I suppose I could pay some cash for some articles but to be honest I would prefer it if someone had the passion and desire to get involved.
In regards to opportunities, well I have a few plans but at this stage I kind of want to keep that to myself, but what I can say is that there is plan!
UK Welding Jobs
I know it has been a little while since I have posted here on International Welder, although I am not going to go through all the excuses.
Today’s post is really about some good news for my readers and comes about from frustratingly only advertising US welding jobs so now with www.workcircle.com I am able to incorporate UK welding jobs on international welder.
